Why CKC?

Why register with the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC)

A CKC registered puppy provides you with the assurance of your puppy’s lineage as well as proof that your puppy does not come from unethical inbreeding practices (genetic disorders, reduced life expectancy, behavioural issues). This is, unfortunately, more common than one would want to believe and although a non-CKC-registered purebred can be perfectly fine and healthy, please do your homework while selecting a breeder.

What is inbreeding? Unfortunately, common practices include when a female gives birth to puppies and the owners will keep a son and later breed the son with its mother or may keep a brother and sister and breed them together.

Find an Accountable Breeder

Acquiring a puppy can be very exciting but choosing a breeder is important.

Get to Know Your Breeder

A breeder is not just the person who will bring your puppy into this world, providing care for the first several weeks of your puppy’s life. They are also someone who may be part of your puppy-raising support team for more weeks to come.

It’s essential in the puppy buying process that you not only get to know your preferred breed but also your breeder. Ask if the puppies’ parents are born in Canada? Are the parents CKC registered?

Many accountable breeders use sires and dams from outside of Canada to help strengthen and improve the genetic diversity in their breed – especially if it is a rare or less common breed. If your breeder used a dam or sire from outside of Canada, or if the puppies are being imported to Canada before sale, ask the breeder for more information. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the breeder’s breeding practices.

Adding a new member to your family can be exciting. We wish you happiness.
